Workers' compensation: Watching out for hazards may prevent harm

With the holiday season here, no one wants to end up in the hospital due to being hurt on the job. Unfortunately, workplace accidents do not abide by the calendar and can happen at any time. As a result, it is up to California workers to do their best to watch out for hazards. Of course, if an accident does occur, they may need workers' compensation benefits.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has four common hazards that could easily cause serious or fatal injuries to workers. First, nearly one-quarter of serious work injuries are caused by falls in the workplace, and falls are the number one cause of fatalities in the construction industry. A second serious hazard in the workplace is electricity. Even low voltage electricity can pose a risk to workers, and electric shock can have serious or fatal outcomes.

Additionally, struck-by injuries are also something to look out for while on the job. Shifting materials, flying objects, falling objects, equipment tip overs and other similar incidents could result in workers being struck by objects and suffering injuries. The last common issue is caught or in-between hazards. Workers could get caught in rotating parts or other moving machinery and suffer harm.

While looking out for these and other serious hazards can help prevent injuries on the job, accidents can happen unexpectedly. If California workers are injured, they may worry about the financial impact those injuries will have. Fortunately, workers' compensation can often help qualifying individuals receive financial help as they recover from their work-related injuries.
